Remote Care and Telehealth for the Future: IoT Evolution Health Conference

The IoT Evolution Health Conference is coming up fast, and we interviewed several of our speakers to get a bit of a preview of what to expect from their sessions.

Here, we spoke to Christopher McCann, CEO and Founder of snap40. snap40 is building a platform to continuously and passively monitor the entire human body, using the data to deliver healthcare, preventively and before you become sick. A serial entrepreneur with extensive engineering and medical experience, McCann is responsible for architecting the company’s vision and direction, which he envisioned during his third year of medical school, eventually dropping out to focus on the company full time. He holds a master’s degree in engineering and computer science from the University of Dundee, Scotland, as well as bachelor’s degrees in medicine and surgery.

He will be speaking in the “Post-OP: Remote patient care, Communications, In-home Recovery” session at the IoT Evolution Health Conference, which is taking place January 29 to February 1, 2019, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, alongside the IoT Evolution Expo.

The session will talk about how most medical after care these days happens at home, from post-operative care to maintaining medications. In addition, around the world, many people in need of care cannot get physical access to medical services. Solutions to these problems might lie with the IoT in the form of remote patient care and streamlined communications. Delegates in this session will learn about how this can work, and how the IoT enables and secures these remote solutions.

What will be some key points you plan to hit in your session?

Can you identify a few important trends influencing your sector of the IoT which will shape the path of the industry? Why these?
Every healthcare provider faces similar economic challenges: an older and sicker population, lower reimbursement, increasing rates of self-pay and lower rates of collection and the introduction of payment based on value and not volume.

Providers are looking at how health and care can be delivered in a new way. The hospital will become a quaternary facility, where patients stay for only a small amount of time before returning home. Most health and care will be delivered in an outpatient setting, and at a far earlier point. Intervention will be delivered proactively, at the lowest cost and lowest acuity time.

However, a key challenge is that once patients leave hospital, it is very hard to monitor their health. Patients don't and can't know when they need to call their doctor.

Connected IoT devices give us the ability to continuously, discreetly and passively monitor human health. Connectivity has reached a point where this can be deployed near ubiquitously across the United States. Computational power and storage in the cloud has become cheap, meaning machine learning can be applied to the large real-time health data streams being generated.

Physicians won’t review massive datasets, but targeted actionable insights that lead to earlier interventions, saved lives and improved healthcare.

What are the biggest challenges facing the IoT? What are some important tools needed to overcome them?
First, the populations in healthcare who can most benefit from IoT and technology e.g. Medicare/Medicaid are those who are the hardest to access. The prevalence of home internet and home WiFi is low in that population. That presents significant challenges in IoT. However, with the prevalence of 4G and now the incoming 5G, we can start to address some of these problems and improve healthcare delivery to these populations.

Second, healthcare is extremely complex. You can build a great piece of tech, but its an even harder challenge to make the patient experience amazing and to make sure it works operationally. Considerations around workflow need to be baked in from the very start. Working closely with target users, embedding yourself into healthcare practice, is a great way to work towards this.

Which vertical markets have the most to gain from IoT implementation? Which are leading and which are still behind the adoption curve?
Across IoT and the wider tech industry, I think healthcare has the most to gain. Healthcare has arguably had the least amount of technological disruption, and yet its the industry that needs it most. We will not be able to deliver healthcare the way we currently do in 20 years. Healthcare systems have to find new ways of coping with the strain and volume of patients. IoT and technology enable these new healthcare models.

What session(s) (other than yours) are you most looking forward to attending at the Expo? Why?
IoT-enabled Patient Experience: Examinations with AR, Sensors, MRI, CT: I think patient experience is the single most important focus for companies operating in the patient-facing care domain. Often companies optimize for the healthcare system, because they are actually paying for the product, but I think this is a huge mistake.

IoT/ LPWAN in Action from an End User - Smart Ground Support Equipment 4.0 for MRO in the Aviation Industry: This one because I think airlines and airports are an example of operational excellence and I think there are so many fascinating lessons to learn from their example.
